In Algonquin, Illinois, Boy Scout Troop 151 has been teaching leadership, responsibility, and life skills to our Scouts for more than seventy-five years. In this time, we have grown from a small, local group to over 100 boys from seven area communities.
I got my start with the scouting when my oldest son was just a Cub Scout. Two of my sons now are Eagle Scouts, and the third is on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. Scouting has been a great opportunity to teach my boys how to contribute to their community. When it comes time for us to consider a fundraising partner, we look for a company that will help us teach these same lessons, and Otis Spunkmeyer Fundraising has been a great match for our troop over the past 3 years.
Our Scouts run fundraisers several times a year to raise funds not only for camping gear and trips but also for their personal scout accounts. They can use the money in their scout accounts for anything they need. We learned about Otis 3 years ago from the parents of one of our Scouts. It didn’t take us long to figure out that their delicious products and turn-key program were a perfect fit for our fundraising needs. As parents, we always look forward to the Spring Otis cookie dough fundraiser. The first year we partnered with Otis, our Scouts sold over 250 tubs of dough. This is our third year working with them, and our sales have continued to improve every year! With 34 Scouts selling Otis dough this year, our troop raised over $1,850. This is money that will help buy tents and equipment so our boys can make the most of their trips into the great outdoors.
It is hard to raise money, with so many different organizations out there competing for every donation dollar. It’s great to know we’re sending our Scouts out with a product that practically sells itself. Even though we didn’t have the entire troop participating in our most recent Otis sale, the scouts that did participate had great enthusiasm combined with high quality Otis products and they sold 296 tubs of dough! Our Scouts and leaders love that Otis Spunkmeyer Fundraising returns such a high percentage of profit back to the sellers, so we can meet our fundraising goals faster and not have to run as many fundraisers throughout the year. It’s great to know that we’re working with a company that everyone recognizes, and that we’re selling a product that people really want.
We teach our Scouts to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent. In Otis Spunkmeyer, we have found a great partner that also conveys these principles and helps our Scouts become leaders.
